Chapter Ten

Saturday, September 27

Morning dawned warm and breezy. Cora, Tante, and Adaleigh sat on the side porch that overlooked Lake Michigan, drinking their coffee, eating scones Tante helped Adaleigh bake yesterday, and watching the sunrise before preparing for the Apple Picking Party. Anticipation had Cora’s heel bouncing.

Her dizziness had to stay away so she could enjoy her aunt’s special day, especially since Tante planned a dance after the potluck dinner. Would Silas ask her to dance? Girlish of her. Perhaps foolish since she planned to be half a world away as soon as her health cooperated. Yet, memories made were ones she could take with her.

“I never tire of watching the sun rise over the lake.” Adaleigh set her chair rocking. “In the attic room at David’s grandmother’s house, I had a perfect view of it. David gets to see it every day, since the boats go out before dawn. One day, I’ll convince him to let me work a catch.”

“He hasn’t let you yet?” Tante set her sewing in her lap, sounding offended on Adaleigh’s behalf.

Adaleigh chuckled. “No. His boats only have a crew of three each, and since he lost the Tuna Mann, he combined crews. Kyle is David’s first mate. Once he can add a third boat back to the fleet, he wants to make Kyle captain.”

“Is that what’s keeping Kyle from formally courting Samantha?” Tante asked. Cora recalled the black-haired young woman and red-headed young man from church the other day.

“I suspect so. Kyle’s dad lost his job at the factory this summer, so Kyle is supporting his parents and three siblings. With winter coming and the fishing season ending, I suspect he might head up to the lumber camps.” Adaleigh traced the top of her cup with her finger. “David might go with them.”

Tante’s jaw dropped. “Why?”

Adaleigh chuckled. “Just because I have an inheritance doesn’t mean David has no pride. He wants to provide for us, and fishing didn’t bring in as much as he hoped this year after losing the Tuna Mann.”

Cora rested her elbow on the arm of the chair and cupped her chin. She’d guessed Adaleigh came from money, seeing that she spent time in Europe, but she couldn’t deny a fascination with her relationship to David.

“Is that why I haven’t heard wedding bells yet?” Tante huffed, jamming her needle into the flowered fabric. “He needs to provide for you even though you have means?”

Adaleigh’s cheeks reddened, but she spoke evenly. “It’s partially my fault. I was gone all summer, and I just … well, I’m still healing from everything that happened this spring, and David has the patience of a saint. Anyway, we plan on using my inheritance to fund philanthropic opportunities, not a wedding.”

“As long as that boy isn’t dragging his feet.” Tante patted Adaleigh’s hand. “Just because you weren’t in town doesn’t mean I didn’t see what you were doing from afar. I appreciate how you worked with the Conglomerate to rebuild Main Street after the storm.”

Adaleigh helped Tante also? Cora couldn’t help feeling a bit left out.
